An Offline School Guide

1. A school guide on a phone is less useful if it needs an internet connection just when a visitor cannot get one. At the fictional Maple School, students have prepared a guide that can be saved and opened offline. It contains a building map, room numbers and short descriptions of school activities. Visitors download it before arriving or collect it using the school's connection at reception. Student editor Ella wants basic information to remain available while people move around the building. The guide does not require a personal account, and printed copies of the main map remain at the desk.

2. An offline copy has a particular advantage: it opens without receiving new information from the internet. The same feature creates a limit. A saved copy does not automatically show a room change made after it was downloaded. The students have therefore put a version date on the first page. Visitors can compare it with the current date shown at reception. If the versions differ, staff can help them save the newer guide or provide the updated information on paper. The date identifies the guide's version, rather than the date of a visitor's appointment.

3. Ella's team has divided the guide into stable information and details likely to change. The location of a staircase is in the first group. The room for a temporary club meeting is in the second. The guide marks changing details clearly and tells visitors to confirm them at reception. This advice does not mean that the entire map is unreliable. It means that a saved file may contain information that was accurate when prepared but needs checking later. The team checks all sections when publishing a new version, not only the page whose wording has changed.

4. The school will use the guide at its next open evening. Ella has asked staff to note general questions visitors find difficult, so the team can improve later versions. The school has not promised to remove its reception desk or printed signs. Some visitors prefer asking a person, while others want a map they can carry. A guide that works offline adds another route to information. To remain useful, it needs clear dates, a way to obtain changes and alternatives for visitors who do not wish to use a phone.
