The Postcard Audio Project

1. A postcard can show a place without explaining what it meant to the person who sent it. In the fictional town of Lakeford, a youth group is recording short stories about old postcards. Residents bring a card and speak about the journey or memory connected with it. The group photographs the card and links the picture to the recording. Coordinator Neta wants visitors to hear individual voices as well as see images. The project is not trying to create a complete history of every place shown. A card may recall a family visit even when it shows an ordinary street.

2. Before recording, volunteers ask the owner which parts of the story may be shared. Someone may describe a journey but choose to leave out a relative's name. The volunteers respect that choice and let the speaker listen to the recording before it is made public. They may remove a long silence if the speaker agrees, but they do not add sentences the person never said. The recording is meant to preserve that person's account. A polished story written by somebody else would serve a different purpose, even if it sounded more dramatic or complete.

3. One resident, Dov, brought a card showing a railway station. He remembered waiting there for his brother during a visit many years earlier. His memory made the card important to him, but it did not establish the exact date on which the station was built. The group placed his spoken memory beside the picture without turning it into a verified statement about the building. Neta added a short label saying that the recording was a personal recollection. Visitors could therefore understand both what they were hearing and the limits of what it could tell them.

4. The first collection will be available in a small exhibition at the community centre. Visitors can listen through headphones, while written versions will be provided for people who prefer reading. Not every postcard owner wants to be recorded, and those people may offer a written account instead. Neta hopes more residents will contribute later, but she has not promised a recording for every card. The collection brings images and personal accounts together while leaving speakers control over what they share. Its value lies partly in keeping the differences between those voices, rather than making all memories sound the same.
