1. Which route would you choose on a hot afternoon: the shortest one, or a slightly longer walk with more shade? A student team in the fictional town of Elmbridge is preparing a map to help pedestrians make that choice. It marks streets where buildings or trees provide shade at particular times. It does not show a single route that everybody must follow. The team began with streets near the school and the library because many people walk between those buildings. The first map covers only that small part of town, rather than pretending to describe every neighbourhood.

2. Making the map requires more than drawing trees. The students walk each street in the morning and again in the afternoon. They mark the shaded sections and note the time of each visit. A street shaded at one time may be sunny at another, so these notes are important. The team also records whether a path is narrow or includes steps. A shaded street may still be inconvenient for someone pushing a large bag on wheels. The map presents this information beside the shade marks instead of deciding which need matters most for every walker.

3. One route to the library follows a quiet side street. It has more afternoon shade than the main road, but it is longer and includes steps. Another route follows the main road and has a wider path without steps. It may be easier for someone using wheels, although there are fewer shaded sections. Student Amir initially described the side street as 'the best route'. After discussing the two routes, he changed that phrase to 'the route with more afternoon shade'. The new description says what the team observed without turning one advantage into a general judgment about the whole route.

4. The map will be available on paper at the library as well as online. A paper copy gives people without a phone a way to use it. The team plans to add another neighbourhood, but only after checking the streets there at different times. It also intends to mark the season of its observations because the shade may change during the year. The map cannot promise that every marked section will be shaded whenever someone visits it. It offers useful, limited information that walkers can combine with their own needs and experience.
